Presidents Reception 2014

Sat 12 July 2014

On a very warm July evening we started our Presidents weekend in Portsmouth. Walking past HMS Warrior and HMS Victory to get to the Mary Rose museum, the surroundings were fabulous. Events started with a champagne reception in the foyer followed by a tour of the museum. The staff on hand were excellent and everyone was fascinated by the museum and its attention to detail, and of course the Mary Rose itself. Culminating in the dining area on the upper deck, guests were able to take a drink and canapes on the balcony whilst viewing the historic yard from the high platform. The Shantymen were in fine tune singing us in!

The meal was excellent, and credit must be given to the waiting and catering staff. After dinner the association presented Mrs Pippa Dutton with Royal Brierly Crystal Piece in recognition of all her work for warrant holders and her help in the formation of the Highgrove association. Our President Mr Richard Bower also took the opportunity to make Pippa and her husband honourary members. After this, in true naval fashion, we gave three cheers to Her Majesty, along with a tot of Navy Rum. Our president then took the opportunity to say a few words, followed by a performance by the Shanty Men, including a wonderful rendition of "Drunken Sailor".

The evening was finished off with an address from our National President Mr Alec McQuin.

The following day was a free to roam day with passes for the historic vessels, with all parties meeting in the restaurant. A wonderfully historic day with access to some of the most important vessels in British Naval History.

Richard Bower and Carol, along with our secretary Rosemary worked tirelessly to ensure the weekend was a success, and very many thanks to them!
